About Gord HunterBorn in Montreal in 1946 and raised as part of a military family subject to frequent moves, Gord Hunter settled in Nepean in 1968 when he started his teaching career at Confederation High School. Gord has lived in the area (Manordale then Tanglewood) ever since.
Gord Hunter was on the staff at Confederation for 31 years, retiring when the school closed in 1999. He taught Physical Education and a variety of classes in the area of social studies and Co-Op education.
Pursuing a life long interest in politics, Gord was elected a Nepean and Regional Councillor in 1980. Continuously re-elected, Gord became a separately elected Councillor for the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton in 1994 and Councillor of the new City of Ottawa in 2000. Having received 86% of the votes in the last election, Gord represents Knoxdale-Merivale Ward at City Hall.
As Councillor, Gord was Chair of the Region's and City's, Planning and Development Committee from 1985 to 2003. He has experience serving on the Social Services Committee, Emergency and Protective Services Committee, and many boards as varied as the Children's Aid Society and Tourist and Convention Bureau. Gord also chaired the Peter D. Clark Centre Advisory Board when it was located in the ward. He currently serves on the Planning and Environment, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Audit, and Superannuation Fund committees. In addition, he sits on the Pine View Municipal Golf Club Board.
Gord is very active in amateur sports such as orienteering, triathlon, downhill and cross-country skiing, rugby and golf. Gord has won many national and provincial titles in orienteering and is a three-time Ottawa ACT award winner for that sport. He is a member of Nepean's "Sports Wall of Fame", and is in "Who's Who in Canadian Sport". He was a member of the Ottawa Sooners O.R.F.U. (football) Champions in 1970 and the Ottawa Indians Rugby Quebec Intermediate Champions in 1971. Gord competed for Canada in five World Orienteering Championships and three World Triathlon Age Class Championships, the most recent being in Madeira, Portugal in May 2004.
Gord is the father of two and grandfather of three.
